31-Year-Old Virgins with AK-47's

A huge breakthrough in the Globar War on Terror yesterday, as 6 radical extremist pizza deliverymen are arrested, charged with plotting to stage an attack on Fort Dix, in New Jersey, in addition to not delivering their order within 30 minutes, and yet not granting the promised $5 discount, either!

You should really read the story. It's kind of sad. Has anyone noticed the fact that every single major terror arrest made in the States since 9/11, with the possible exception of Richard Reid, the guy who tried to explode his Converse All-Stars, has been a blithering idiot? This is one side-fact of the post-9/11 world that is rarely noticed. Most terrorists are stupid. Stupid, and uneducated. Only stupid, uneducated people think blowing themselves up to get noticed makes any sense at all.

Of course a few uneducated people can be tactically bright, or street-smart, or whatever you want to call it. They can be dangerous. Osama Bin-Laden comes to mind. But for the most part, they're idiots. They do things like hand a VHS tape of themselves firing AK-47's into the air and yelling 'Allahu Akhbar!' to a video store clerk and ask him to put it on a DVD for them. Also, they are marginally employed losers, grown men working as pizza-delivery boys.

This is why, fundamentally, I am not concerned about terrorists. We are much smarter than they are. Our cops are smarter, our CIA is much smarter, and I'm guessing the average NSA employee would have to undergo multiple botched lobotomies before they could qualify to serve in Al Quaeda.

Now that's not to say that there's no danger. Of course, stupid people can make a lot of trouble. But if we'd all just calm down a touch, and think about the ways that we can make it even marginally harder to make that sort of trouble (prevent access to fissile nuclear material, smart border control, enhanced communication between intelligence services, etc.) it won't be hard to go about living our lives with a minimum of disruption and a maximal preservation of life, liberty, and the pursuit of big-screen TV's.

If you're insteresting in that sort of thing, read "Beyond Fear" by Bruce Schneier. Its a good, objective, look at security in the real world. Everything from how to protect the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone, to protecting planes. He also makes a few good points on how the point of terrorism, get this its crazy, is terror. That's where they get the name, its neat. So by being scared to leave our houses or scared to bring water bottles onto a plane, then "The Terrorists Have Already Won (tm)".
